Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Sandford Chardonnay 2019
Gordon Newton Johnson, a trailblazer in the world of winemaking, was raised in Stellenbosch, surrounded by some of the finest winemakers. With a background in economics and a flair for creativity, he approached winemaking as an art. His self-directed learning journey took him to France, California, and New Zealand, before he started crafting wines at Newton Johnson in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in 1999. By embracing a holistic approach to viticulture and steering clear of commercial additives, Newton Johnson has garnered significant praise, including a consistent record of five-star ratings in Platter’s Wine Guide and high marks from global critics. The finest juice is pressed from whole bunches directly into barrels without settling. Fermentation occurs naturally, without the addition of sulphur, allowing a variety of micro-organisms to flourish. The wine is aged for 11 months in 40% new Burgundy barrels, followed by an additional 5 months in older oak. It undergoes no fining, coarse filtration, or sulphur adjustments prior to bottling. Tasting Notes: Experience the vibrant flavors of green and ripe lime, complemented by white flowers, baking spices, crushed stones, and a hint of gunflint. The wine offers a rich texture and a long-lasting, lively finish. It is ready to enjoy now and will continue to develop over the next decade.
