Simonsig Gewurtztraminer 2022, Stellenbosch

Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2022, Stellenbosch Simonsig's Gewürztraminer is crafted in a "Late Harvest" style, indicating that the grapes are picked later in the season, typically from early March to mid-April. This wine is made entirely from Gewürztraminer grapes, a rare variety in South Africa with only about 120 hectares planted. Simonsig was a pioneer in experimenting with Gewürztraminer back in 1973. This grape variety is challenging to cultivate in South Africa due to its susceptibility to rot, resulting in low yields. The wine is produced using grapes from both older vines, which add depth and complexity, and younger vines, which enhance the aroma and freshness. Fermentation and brief maturation occur in stainless steel tanks. The Gewürztraminer boasts a beautiful golden hue, with a sweet aroma featuring exotic notes of lychee, ripe apples, grapefruit, and rosehip. Its flavor is rich and immediate, with hints of preserved mirabelles, citrus, and tutti-frutti candies. The wine maintains a delightful balance between freshness and sweetness, finishing with a crisp touch. It is an excellent choice as an aperitif, pairs well with fish or seafood, and complements Asian cuisine, such as Indian chicken dishes.
